Taxonomy. Original description: Benthophilus ctenolepidus Kessler, 1877: 48 , Pl. 4 (fig. 11) [ The Aralo-Caspian Expedition]; Caspian Sea, 40°08'N, 0°26'E of Baku, Azerbaijan.
