Carinosmylus New, 1986a View in CoL View at ENA

Type species. Carinosmylus durus New, 1986a: 448 (by original designation).

Diagnosis. Female forecoxa with patch of pedicellate setae, anteroventral process absent; wings elongate, narrow ovoid, FW hyaline with mottled brown venation; FW stem of RP short, RP originating close to wing base, RP1 originating close to origin of RP; RP branches sinuous distally; FW M forked at approximately 2/3 wing length, MA and MP parallel until close to wing margin, both pectinately branched; female with FW veins regular, not incrassate; FW CuA not strongly arched towards posterior wing margin; FW 2A terminates in wing margin level with origin of first RP branch; male tergites 8 and 9 partially fused; ectoprocts without posterior processes; female sternite 7 highly modified with prominent posteroventral keel; sternite 8 bilobed; gonapophysis 9 bilobed with a pair of ventral arms, gonocoxite 9 slender; spermathecae spherical.

Comments. Carinosmylus is monotypic genus where the female genitalia are highly modified ( New, 1986a). New (1986a) suggested that Carinosmylus was closely related to Stenosmylus and Stenolysmus and possibly represented an unusual species of Stenosmylus . Winterton et al. (2017) similarly recovered Carinosmylus as sister to a clade comprising Stenosmylus , Stenolysmus and Oedosmylus , or as sister to Euporismus . The status of the genus is maintained here pending additional studies of this group of genera.
