Cretosmylus Makarkin, 1990 View in CoL

( Fig. 11B View FIGURE 11 )

Type species. Cretosmylus sibiricus Makarkin, 1990: 102 (by original designation).

Diagnosis. Forewing medium length; costal area broad, subcostal veinlets dense and simple at least in basal half of wing; branches of RP in basal half of wing closely spaced (6–7 branches in basal half); M fork distant from origin of RP1, level with RP3; A1 and A2 weakly pectinate; hind wing unknown.

Comments. A compression fossil where the sole species is represented only by the proximal half of a forewing. Makarkin (1990) compared this genus with those of Kempyninae as the available venation is more similar to that of Kempyninae than other subfamilies. However, the apical part of the forewing and the hind wing are missing, which possess some diagnostic features of the subfamily such as the shape of the distal part of RP and CuA. The kempynine affinity of Cretosmylus should be considered as tentative and placement in Osmylinae is also plausible (see also Wang et al., 2011a; Makarkin, 2014). The forking of the forewing medial vein is unique for this genus amongst genera in either subfamily.
