Description. Measurement. Body length: PEL, male, 3.22–4.51 mm, female, 3.72–4.75 mm. Width: EW, male, 2.09–2.33 mm, female, 1.97–2.54 mm. Biometric data are given in Table 2.
Coloration. Body fulvous. Head black. Apex of mandible black. Antennae black. Pronotum black. Scutellum black. Elytra fulvous. Ventral surface black. Legs black.
Habitus. Body ovate.
Head ( Fig. 9A View FIGURE 9 ) covered with sparse setiferous punctures; setae produced from inside punctures ( Fig. 10C View FIGURE 10 ); frontoclypeal suture bisinuate, middle portion narrow, about one-third width of clypeus; labrum and clypeus convex and furnished with setae; length of clypeus longer than that of labrum. Canthus large, acutely triangular but apex rounded. Apex of mandible bifurcate and furnished with three teeth apically on inner margin; lateral angles furnished with setae ( Fig. 8D View FIGURE 8 ). Antennae long; segments short, except for first, third, and fourth which are long and slender, and eleventh which is pointed; all segments setous, fifth through eleventh segments with shorter, denser setae ( Fig. 8C View FIGURE 8 ).
Pronotum ( Fig. 8A View FIGURE 8 , 9B View FIGURE 9 ) with blunt lateral tubercles, strongly tapered towards base; groove of anterior margin distinctly impressed a narrow distance from margin; posterior marginal groove undulate and complete; lateral basal angles swollen and with two to five long setae near base; surface regularly convex and with reticulate coriaceous microsculpture, densely covered with coarse setiferous punctures ( Fig. 10B View FIGURE 10 ); distance between punctures on central portion 1.5–3 times their own diameter, denser laterally. Setae produced from inside punctures ( Fig. 10B View FIGURE 10 ).
Elytra short, leaving apex of pygidium exposed, moderately vaulted in lateral view; lateral sides ovate, widening approaching posterior margin; dorsal surface with reticulate coriaceous microsculpture ( Fig. 10D View FIGURE 10 ), irregularly covered with dense setiferous punctures which are as coarse as on pronotum and separated by 1–3 times their diameter; setae produced just anterior to punctures ( Fig. 10D View FIGURE 10 ); sutural and lateral grooves complete from elytral base to apex; basal areas of elytra weakly convex on either side of suture; humerus strongly protruding anteriorly; epipleuron narrow. Scutellum trapezoidal, with setae.
Disc of mesoventrite rugose; process densely furnished with setiferous punctures ( Fig. 8B View FIGURE 8 , 9C View FIGURE 9 ). Mesepisternum furnished with setiferous punctures except on posteroventral margin ( Fig. 8B View FIGURE 8 , 9C View FIGURE 9 ). Surface of metaventrite with reticulate coriaceous microsculpture ( Fig. 10C View FIGURE 10 ), central area covered with setiferous punctures, becoming denser on lateral portions, setae produced from inside punctures ( Fig. 10C View FIGURE 10 ). Surface of sternites with reticulate coriaceous microsculpture, sparsely covered with setiferous punctures. In male, posterior margin of 7th sternite evenly curved ( Fig. 9D View FIGURE 9 ). In female, posterior margin of 7th sternite straight, but bisinuate on central portion ( Fig. 9E View FIGURE 9 ).
Legs densely furnished with setae; tibial setae becoming denser and longer apically. Hind femora thickened. Fore tibiae straight; mid tibiae bowed on apical half; hind tibiae weakly bowed and feebly widened near apex; mid and hind tibiae with a sharply defined and finely crenulate carina along external face. Apex of protibia with one spur; apices of meso- and metatibiae with two spurs. Tarsi distinctly shorter than tibiae, and basal three segments gradually widened apically.
Male genitalia as shown in Fig. 11 View FIGURE 11 A–F: 8th sternite furnished with setae, cylindrical, membrane long, allowing for posterior horizontal extension ( Fig. 11E, F View FIGURE 11 ); spiculum fan-shaped ( Fig. 11D View FIGURE 11 ); median struts of median lobe approximately 2.2 times as long as median lobe ( Fig. 11A View FIGURE 11 ); apex of median lobe pointed and inclined to one side ( Fig. 11B View FIGURE 11 ); paramere not developed ( Fig. 11C View FIGURE 11 ).
Spermatheca as shown in Fig. 11G View FIGURE 11 .
Host plant. Euonymus sieboldianus Blume [Japanese name: Mayumi].
Remarks. Zeugophora nigricollis is distinguished from Z. bicolor ( Kraatz, 1879) by the following characters. Color of pronotum; completely black in Z. nigricollis , posterior half fulvous in Z. bicolor ; ventral coloration; black in Z. nigricollis , thorax and abdomen fulvous in Z.bicolor ; male and female genitalia: shape of median lobe; median lobe is shorter and wider and apex of median lobe is narrower in Z. bicolor than Z. nigricollis ( Fig. 11B, I View FIGURE 11 ); shape of spermatheca; stem is longer in Z. nigricollis than in Z. bicolor ( Fig. 11G, J View FIGURE 11 ). Using the above-mentioned characters, I have decided to restore Z. nigricollis to a valid species from junior synonymy with Z. bicolor .
