Eupithecia virgaureata Doubleday, 1861 , The Zoologist 19: 7566. Syntypes, at least 3 (BMNH), [ United Kingdom]. Eupithecia altenaria Staudinger, 1861 , Stettiner Entomologische Zeitung 22 (10–12): 401. Syntypes ♂♀ (coll. O. Staudinger in MNHU), [ Norway]: [near Bossekop] (treated as var. of E. virgaureata in Bohatsch, 1893).

Eupithecia invisa Butler, 1878 , Annals and Magazine of Natural History (5) 1 (6): 444. Holotype ♀ (BMNH, examined), Japan: Hakodaté (treated as subsp. to E. virgaureata in Inoue, 1980).

A widespread Palaearctic species, occurring from Ireland in the west to Kamtchatka Peninsula in the east. It was recorded from Uliassutai in Mongolia by Staudinger (1897) as E. virgaureata var altenaria Stgr. Mongolia (aimags): Tuv, Zavkhan.
