Erect or procumbent herbs, rarely dwarf shrubs. Leaves opposite, whorled or rarely alternate, entire or crenate. Flowers 5(7)- merous, axillary, solitary or clustered, or in terminal bracteate panicles or racemes. Corolla rotate; lobes entire or dentate, often glandular within.
