More or less pubescent perennial; stems 25-100(-150) cm. Leaves up to 10x5 cm, ovate to lanceolate, obtuse to acute, cordate at base, doubly crenate-serrate. Bracts mostly leaf-like; pedicels 3-4 times as long as the calyx, glandular-pubescent. Calyx-lobes c. 4 mm, orbicular, more or less puberulent; margin broadly scarious. Corolla 8-12 mm, dull purple. Staminode suborbicular. Capsule 5-8 mm, ovoid-globose, subobtuse. 2n = 58, 60. Hedges, riversides and meadows. W. Europe, northwards to S. England. Az Br Ga Hs Lu.
