16. E. confusa Pugsley , Jour. Bot. (London) 57: 172 (1919).

Stem up to 20(-45) cm, flexuous, with (0-)2-8(-10) pairs of usually long, slender, flexuous branches, usually bearing numerous secondary branches. Cauline internodes up to 2 | times, the lower floral up to 2(-3) times as long as leaves. Lowest flower at node (2—)5—12(—14). Leaves up to 10 mm, subglabrous to sparsely setose, sometimes also with short glandular hairs, the cauline ovate to ovate-lanceolate, with 1-5 pairs of obtuse to acute teeth, the lower floral 3-5-9(-10) mm, often alternate and with flowers only in alternate axils, usually ovate to trullate, cuneate, rounded, or occasionally truncate at base, with 2-6 pairs of subacute to acute teeth at least as long as wide. Corolla 5-9 mm, white to purple. Capsule 3-5-5-5(-6-5) mm, usually about as long as calyx, 2-3 times as long as wide, oblong to elliptic-oblong, truncate or emarginate. 2«=44. Heathy pastures and sand-dunes. • Ireland, England, Foerôer; probably introduced in W. Norway. Br Fa Hb [*No].

The characteristic profuse branching of this species is reduced in mountain habitats or by early starvation, and is generally less in N. Scotland and the Faerôer. In S. England there is fairly frequent intergradation with 13. Hybrids with 11, 33 and 34 are also frequent. (17-20). E. stricta group. Stem and branches usually rigid and erect. Leaves glabrous to densely hairy, frequently also with short glandular hairs, usually narrowly ovate or elliptical to oblong-lanceolate; floral leaves usually appressed to the flower, with long, very acute to aristate teeth, the basal teeth apically directed. Capsule usually much shorter than calyx, (1 j-)2 j-5 times as long as wide, oblong to elliptic-oblong. 1 Corolla 4-5-6-5 mm 20. liburnica 1 Corolla (6—)7—11 mm 2 Lowest flower usually at node 3 or lower; capsule emarginate

18. hyperborea 2 Lowest flower usually at node 4 or higher; capsule truncate or slightly emarginate 3 Capsule usually 4-5-5 mm, 2 |- 3 | times as long as wide;

branches usually 2-6 pairs or more; lowest flower at node

(3—)7—14(—18); plant usually strongly tinged with purple

17. stricta 3 Capsule usually 5-7 mm, 3-5 times as long as wide; branches

O-3(-6) pairs; lowest flower at node (4—)5—8(—9); plant not or slightly tinged with purple 19. pectinata
