Remarks. Valid species described from Denmark ( Müller 1776). Kořínek et al. (1999) concluded that "many populations identified as the species B. longirostris from India, Africa, and possibly Australia are either belonging to the species B. tripurae or to some other not yet described species", while B. longirostris "has more restricted distribution, probably Holarctic". But this hypothesis was not checked by them by any method.

In contrast, preliminary genetical data (Kotov & Taylor, unpublished) suggests that B. longirostris is a real cosmopolitan species. No material from India was studied genetically, but B. longirostris s. str. could be present there also. At this time, a morphological discrimination of B. longirostris and B. tripurae is possible only based on male characters (Kotov et al. 2009). So, new material (with males and accessible for genetical analysis) must be checked for a final conclusion about the presence of B. longirostris s. str. in India. Sharma B.K. & Sharma S. (2001) listed this species as a first record from Bihar, but it was already documented from the Ganga river of Bhagalpur and Barh (Bihar) by Bilgrami (1991a).

Distribution. B. longirostris s. str. is a truly cosmopolitan species (Kotov & Taylor, unpublished genetical data).
