(85) Coronatella monacantha ( Sars, 1901) s.lat.
Indian records. Andaman & Nicobar Islands — Venkataraman (1992d, 2000a); Jammu & Kashmir— Yousuf et al. (1984), Nath (1994), Siraj et al. (2006, 2007); Manipur —Sharma B.K. & Sharma S. (2009a); Tripura — Vekatraman (1995b), Venkataraman & Das (2000); West Bengal — Venkataraman & Das (1993), Venkataraman (1998c), Venkataraman et al. (2000); General record— Fernando & Kanduru (1984), Sharma B.K. & Michael (1987), Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003).
Remarks. C. monacantha is a valid Neotropical taxon, described from Brazil ( Sars 1901) and redescribed by Sinev (2004b). Similar forms are found in the Oriental zone ( Idris & Fernando 1981; Idris 1983), they “don't differ from the type population in ... morphology and variability of the labrum and major head pores. The number of denticles on valves in Malaysian population varies from 1 to 3” ( Sinev 2004b, p. 11). The status of the Oriental populations needs to be checked in more detail and other characters. Several names are available for species close to monacantha and nomenclature is quite complex for this Coronatella- section of Alona like species (Van Damme et al. 2010).
Distribution. Neotropical, Afrotropical and Oriental zones ( Sinev 2004b). C. monacantha s.str. is likely limited to the Neotropics, Oriental populations still need to be sorted out.
Coronatella monacantha tridentata ( Stingelin, 1905)
Indian records. Assam —Sharma B.K. & Sharma S. (2010); Bihar —Sharma B.K. & Sharma S. (2001, 2008); Goa— Rane (2008); Meghalaya —Sharma S. (2008a); Tamil Nadu —Michael & Sharma B.K. (1988), Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2002, 2009); General record— Murugan et al. (1998), Raghunathan & Suresh Kumar (2003)
Remarks. A taxon that was described from Thailand ( Stingelin 1905). Status unclear, and specimens with three denticles on postero-ventral angle of valves occur among C. monacantha populations (Van Damme et al. 2010), this is subject to variability—however, tridentata remains an available name for C. monacantha populations in the Oriental Region.
