Shrub or trees, to 10 m. Petiole ca. 2 mm. Leaves with lower surface glabrous. Blades ca. 6 × 3 cm, ovate or ovateelliptic; base rounded, apex subacuminate; secondary vein pairs 7–9. Inflorescences axillary, flowers solitary or a few together. Pedicels slender, up to 2 cm. Calyx lobes ca. 4 × 3 mm, ovate-deltate, strongly reflexed. Petals ca. 6–12 × 3 mm, obovate-elliptic, strongly reflexed, white. Stamens 4–5 mm long. Style ca. 6 mm. Fruits 1.5–2.5 cm in diameter, sub-globular but strongly ribbed, red or orange at maturity.
Vernacular name:— Sary Mpwera kely (dialect Shibushi).
Notes:— The species is widely known as ‘ Surinam cherry’ and originates from Brazil. It is cultivated throughout tropical regions for its edible fruits. It is recorded from Mayotte and likely to be cultivated or naturalised on other islands.
