Shrubs or small trees. Flowers creamy-white or rose-pink, functionally female or male by abortion, axillary or terminal, solitary or in fascicles. Bracteoles conspicuous and typically persistent at base of receptacle in flower. Calyx lobes 4–5, well-developed, free. Petals 4–5, ovate, free, persistent. Stamens numerous, in male flowers inserted in a well-defined ring that surrounds the base of the style, filaments free. Ovary 2-locular; placentation axile; ovules numerous in each locule; style simple or bifid, in male flowers rudimentary. Fruit a berry with 1–3 globular seeds.

A pantropical genus consisting of about 1000 species with around a third distributed in the Old World ( WCSP 2015). In the Comoros archipelago seven species are represented, with five native species.
