LECTOTYPE: AMNH 594489 , adult female, collected near Waingapu , 09.40S, 120.16E (Times Atlas), on Nangawesi (5 Nangamessi) Bay, Sumba Island, Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia, in February 1896, by William Doherty. From the Rothschild Collection.

COMMENTS: Doherty collected only two female specimens of this form (see the original description and Hartert, 1896f: 580, where they are listed as Acrocephalus australis ). A Rothschild type label is tied only on AMNH 594489, establishing Hartert’s intent for that specimen to be the type, but neither in his original description nor in his list of types in the Rothschild Collection ( Hartert, 1928: 214) did he distinguish between the two specimens. In order to confirm Hartert’s intent, I hereby designate AMNH 594489 the lectotype of Acrocephalus stentoreus sumbae , thereby removing any ambiguity in the older literature. AMNH 594490 becomes the paralectotype.

White and Bruce (1986: 344) considered sumbae to be a synonym of A. stentoreus celebensis , and they provided a discussion.
