TYPE LOCALITY: Vietnam, Tonkin .
DISTRIBUTION: Hainan Isl. ( China); E. of the Mekong River in S. Yunnan ( China), Laos, Vietnam and Kampuchea, N. to Red River in Vietnam.
COMMENT: Type species of Nomascus which was recognized as a separate genus by Lekagul and McNeely, 1977:308; but see Corbet and Hill, 1980:91, and Szalay and Delson, 1979:461.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I as Hylobates spp. and U.S. ESA - Endangered as Hylobates spp. (including Nomascus spp. ).
