TYPE LOCALITY: Cameroun, Ja River, Bitye .
DISTRIBUTION: Cameroun, south of the Sanaga River; Rio Muni ( Equatorial Guinea); Gabon; Congo Republic.
COMMENT: Delson and Napier, 1976, Bull. Zool. Nomenci., 33:46, considered sphinx the type of subgenus Papio . Placed in subgenus Mandrillus by Dandelot, 1974, Part 3:9. See Grubb, 1973, Folia Primatol., 20:161- 177, for details of distribution.
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I as P. (= Mandrillus ) sphinx and U.S. ESA - Endangered as P. sphinx .
