Fimbriatella subfilogranata Montanaro Gallitelli & Tacoli 1951 View in CoL
Figs 28A–B View FIGURE 28
Fimbriatella filograna Dod. var. nova — Krach 1939: 33, pl. 1, fig. 19.
* Fimbriatella filogranata Doderlein var. subfilogranata n.—Montanaro Gallitelli & Tacoli 1951: 176, pl. 2, fig. 3.
Type material. Holotype, SL: 10 mm, illustrated in Montanaro Gallitelli & Tacoli (1951: 176, pl. 2, fig. 3), Žabčice ( Czech Republic). The specimen might have been stored at the University of Modena (Italy) but cannot be traced.
Illustrated material. NHMW 1869/0001/0210a, SL: 3.2 mm, MD: 1.9 mm, Baden ( Austria), Figs 28A View FIGURE 28 1 –A View FIGURE 1 2 View FIGURE 2 . NHMW 1869/0001/0210b, SL: 5.4 mm, MD: 2.9 mm, Baden ( Austria), Figs 28B View FIGURE 28 1 –B View FIGURE 1 2 View FIGURE 2 .
Revised description. Medium-sized, moderately broad conical shell; apical angle ~36°. Protoconch multispiral, of about 2.5 smooth whorls, heterostrophic, nucleus fully exposed, tilted at angle of about 120°. Teleoconch of six angled whorls with moderately incised suture. Sculpture on first whorl of three primary spiral cords: S1 weak; S2 very weak; S3 stronger, forming peripheral carina angulating whorl. Abapically S1 moderately developed placed a short distance below suture, S2 remains weak, S3 strengthens, placed at about one-quarter whorl height. On penultimate whorl weak secondary spiral intercalated between S2 and S3, equal in strength to S2. Axial sculpture of about 30 delicate lamellae, overriding spiral cords, forming delicately cancellate pattern with small, pointed tubercles at intersections. Base roundly angled, nearly flat, with two peribasal cords, with 3–4 further weaker cords over base. Aperture ovate. Columella slightly twisted. Columellar callus poorly delimited. No parietal callus.
Discussion. This species is problematic as the type material seems to be lost and the discussion and illustrated herein is based on a subadult specimen ( Figs 28A View FIGURE 28 1 –A View FIGURE 1 2 View FIGURE 2 ). A second, larger specimen ( Figs 28B View FIGURE 28 1 –B View FIGURE 1 2 View FIGURE 2 ) is only tentatively identified as Fimbriatella subfilogranata . Its sculpture is denser, and a secondary cord becomes intercalated between the suture and S1 on the third whorl. Montanaro Gallitelli & Tacoli (1951) introduced this species as ‘variety’ of Fimbriatella filogranata (Sacco, 1895) from the Tortonian of Italy. These species differ distinctly in the much slenderer shape and strongly incised suture of F. filogranata (see Sacco 1904: pl. 25, figs 48–49; Montanaro Gallitelli & Tacoli 1951: pl. 2, fig. 3; Ferrero Mortara et al. 1984: pl. 41, fig. 8).
Paleoenvironment. The occurrence in the Baden Formation suggests middle to outer neritic water depths ( Kranner et al. 2021).
Distribution. Known so far only from the middle Badenian (late Langhian) of the Central Paratethys Sea.
Central Paratethys Sea. Middle Miocene (Badenian): Carpathian Foredeep: Województwo Śląskie ( Poland) ( Krach 1939); Alpine-Carpathian Foredeep: Žabčice ( Czech Republic) (Montanaro Gallitelli & Tacoli 1951); Vienna Basin: Baden ( Austria) (hoc opus).
