Subgenus Leydigia (Neoleydigia) subgen. nov.
Type species. Alona acanthocercoides Fischer, 1854 = Leydigia (Neoleydigia) acanthocercoides ( Fischer, 1854) View in CoL now.
Diagnosis. Sufficient characters. (1) a fine (small-scale) striation on valves present in rudimentary state in L. propinqua , in all other species well-defined; (2) basal spine on postabdominal claw rudimentary or completely reduced; (3) setae 1 and 2 on exopodite IV with long, fine setules.
Etymology. From ' néos ' (Gr.), new; this is a newly constructed taxon within Leydigia .
Taxonomic comments. The subgenus can be subdivided into (1) a compact acanthocercoides species group, uniting the most advanced and slightly different species and (2) a series of more primitive, welldistinguished species. The latter are covered here relatively well, though new species perhaps remain to be found. In contrast, the acanthocercoides -group must be revised in the future and numerous samples from different localities considered.
