Diagnosis. Midsized (5.5-10.0 mm) bright colored flies. Frons and face as wide as one eye; vibrissal angles distinctly raised over oral margin, and lunula narrowed downwards; head in profile angular; hind border of head distinctly shortened; proclinate orb numerous, as a group of irregularly placed erect hairs; flagellomere 2.0–2.5× as long as pedicel. Midfemora and tibia of males with ctenidia from long and widened setae.

Distribution: 18 species in SW Palearctic and Afrotropical regions. According to Zumpt (1964: 56) an undescribed species of this genus probably distributed in Madagascan region ( Madagascar I.): “ Two female specimens before me probably represent a new species… Following Rohdendorf (1930), its runs down to his subgenus Xerophilomyia ”.
