Inflorescences ramiflorous, fascicle, sessile or with peduncle up to 1.5 mm long, rachis up to 1.5 mm long, puberulent; bracts 0.5–1 mm long, ovate or suborbiculate, puberulent, deciduous after anthesis; 2–8 flowers; pedicels 2–7 mm long, pubescent; bracteoles 0.5–1.5 mm long, free or connate at the base, ovate or suborbiculate, apices obtuse, puberulent, not reflexed, persistent in the fruit; trichomes brownish. Flower buds 2–4.5 mm in diameter. Flowers with smooth, pubescent hypanthia; calyx lobes 4, fused along the first third of the bud length, 1.5–2.5 × 1–3 mm, ovate or suborbiculate, apices obtuse or rounded, ciliate; petals 4, obovate, oil glands evident; staminal ring puberulent; stamens with filaments 1–6 mm, anthers oblong; style 2–6.5 mm, glabrous, stigma punctiform; ovary 2–locular, ovules 16–24 per locule, locule internally glabrous. Fruits 10–15 × 5–8 mm, ellipsoid, smooth, puberulent, purple when ripe; seeds 1–2 per fruit, 4–8.5 × 2.5–6.5 mm, ellipsoid, testa smooth.

Distribution and habitat: — Eugenia schottiana is known from collections from the state of Bahia through Rio de Janeiro in the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil. The specimen previously determined as E. schottiana for Espírito Santo (A.P. Fontana 5204) is a different entity, being the specimens here treated the first record for the species in the state. In the RNV, the species is found in the Muçununga and Campo Nativo vegetation.

Phenology: —Flowering in December through February; fruiting in March through June ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ).

Taxonomic comments: —The species can be assigned to Eugenia sect. Umbellatae due to its fasciculate inflorescences and bracteoles persistent in the fruit. Eugenia schottiana is morphologically similar to E. maritima but can be distinguished by its leaf blades with midvein biconvex adaxially and flowers with pubescent hypanthium (vs. midvein sulcate adaxially and flowers with hypanthium glabrous). Additionally, E. schottiana is easily distinguished from all other species occurring in RNV by the combination of its leaf blades with midvein biconvex, inflorescences in fascicle ramiflorous, on leafless nodes, flowers with pubescent hypanthium and calyx lobes ciliate, and bracteoles persistent in the fruit.
