Lectotype (designated here):— PORTUGAL. Alentejo : “ Circa Portalegre ”, May 1865, Machado C. s.n. (COI00078495!, sub Viola arvensis ; Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ).

Notes: —The name Viola tricolor var. machadeana was published by Coutinho (1892), describing a pansy from the Eastern regions of Portugal (“ regione orientali ”), having blue flowers larger than V. tricolor var. arvensis . More recently, a new combination of this name was published, Viola kitaibeliana subsp. machadeana , for a pansy with a distribution limited to the North-Eastern regions of Portugal and characterised by having petals almost double the length of sepals.

As Coutinho in the protologue wrote within brackets “ V. arvensis, Machado , pro parte, in herb. Univ.! ”, the lectotype was chosen among the original material in the Herbarium of the University of Coimbra (COI) according to Art. 9.4 of ICN ( Turland et al. 2018). Particularly, several specimens cited by Coutinho were found in COI but only one of them, sub Viola arvensis , was collected by C. Machado in the “ arredores de Portoalegre (C. Machado [majo, 1865]!) ”, therefore such a specimen was chosen as the lectotype ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ).

Viola kitaibeliana subsp. machadeana is a Portuguese endemic.
