Distribution. Known from all the oceans of the world: NE-Atlantic, Bay of Biscay, Mauritania, Tristan da Cunha, Gulf of Mexico, W-America (Lower California), Zanzibar, South Africa, Ascension Is., Philippines, Indonesia, China Sea, Hawaii, Southern Ocean.
Depth range. 400–6050 m.
Habitat. Meso- to abysso-pelagic.
Iberian Seas published records. SE Bay of Biscay continental slope ( Lagardère 1977, 1983, 1985, Lagardère & Nouvel 1980, Petryashov 2014). Southern margin of the Cap-Ferret trench ( Elizalde et al. 1991, 1993, Elizalde 1994, Sorbe & Weber 1995). Cap Breton canyon ( Milne-Edwards 1880, Norman 1880, Aguirrezabalga et al. 1988, Sorbe 1990, Urzelai et al. 1990, San Vicente 2010a, Frutos & Sorbe 2014). Off the Asturian Central Coast ( Caullery 1896, Anadon 1993). Le Danois Bank (Sánchez et al. 2008, Preciado et al. 2009). Off Calician and Asturian coasts ( Lagardère 1983). Off Finisterre ( Nouvel 1943) . Azores /Biscay rise close to the margin of the Iberian-Abyssal Plain (42ºN, 17ºW: Hargreaves 1985). Off Portugal ( Nouvel 1943, De Jong & Casanova 1997a, Wittmann & Riera 2012). Off Canary Archipelago ( Haroun & Garrido 2003, Wittmann et al. 2004, Hernández et al. 2008, Arrasate-López et al. 2012, Wittmann & Riera 2012) . Azores ( Sars 1885, Fage 1941, Nouvel 1943, Tattersall & Tattersall 1951, Mees & Aas 2013).
Remarks. The presence of this species in the Mediterranean Sea reported by Alcaraz (1986) and San Vicente (2010b) should be considered as an erroneous reference (Alcaraz, com. pers.).
