Diospyros communis Doweld , nom. nov.
≡ Diospyros dubia Göppert (1854: 47 View in CoL , pl. 12, fig. 72), nom. illeg. non Wallich ex De Candolle (1844: 223) (ICN, Art. 53.1).
Type:— INDONESIA. Java Island, Pesawahan (Djampang kulon, Tjandjur, Preangan), Junghuhn 353 (holotype, RGM 11840, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden, The Netherlands).
Stratigraphy:—Tertiary (Pleistocene?).
IFPNI registration lsid:— 4CED646C-C6DC-405F-8923-4F8EF9ACF753
Eponymy:—Named for the common Diospyros -like venation.
Notes:— Göppert (1854) described D. dubia from the Tertiary (?Pleistocene) sediments of Pesawahan, Java Island, now Indonesia, based on a single fossil leaf imprint showing typical secondary venation of the Diospyros - type. It was compared with the extant species D. virginiana Linnaeus (1753: 1057) and the fossil-species D. pannonica Ettingshausen (1851: 19) from the Miocene sediments near Vienna, Austria. However, D. dubia Göppert , having no heterotypic synonyms, is a later homonym (Art. 53.1 of the ICN, McNeill & al. 2012) of Diospyros dubia Wallich ex de Candolle (1844: 223) .
