Linnaeus’s protologue of Cistus italicus in Systema Naturae, ed. 10 (1759: 1078) consists of a nomen specificum legitimum “C. suffruticosus exstipulatus, fol. oppositis hispidis: inferioribus ovatis; superoribus lanceolatis, ramis patentibus”. Linnaeus indicated the geographical provenance of this species as “ Habitat in Italia ” in Species Plantarum ed. 2 ( Linnaeus 1762: 740), with identical diagnosis and the indication “ Helianthemum , serpilli folio villoso, flore pallido, italicum” extracted from Barrelier’s work (1714: 510, t. 366). Linnaeus (1762: 740) also provides a more detailed description.

As indicated by Jarvis (2007: 421) only one herbarium sheet preserved at LINN contains Linnaeus’s original material of this name: LINN 689.36 (Herb. Linn., image available at: http://linnean-online.org/6446/). This specimen bears only a fragment of H. oelandicum subsp. italicum with leaves and flowers, which is corresponding to the current concept of this taxon. The sheet is annotated “ italicus ” at the base of the sheet, with the same symbol that appears in the Linnaeus’s protologue (1759: 1078). We have been unable to locate any further original material in any Linnaean or Linnaean-linked herbaria. Therefore, we designated here the LINN 689.36 (Herb. Linn.) as the lectotype of Cistus italicus .
