Distribution: probably from W Europe to European part of Russia, known from Lower Volga region of Russia (E. Tsvetkov, pers. comm.); distribution requires clarification due to the problem of distinguishing between Elegia fallax ( Staudinger, 1881) and E. atrifasciella . In Ukraine: Chernihiv ( Panasyura & Govorun 2012: as E. atrifasciella ), Kharkiv ( Karolinskiy et al. 2019: as E. fallax , after re-identification— E. atrifasciella (Karolinskiy et al. (in press)), Mykolaiv & Kherson (Black Sea Reserve) ( Zelinska 1959: as E. atrifasciella ; Zelinska 1961: as E. atrifasciella, 1977 : as E. atrifasciella ), Kherson ( Govorun 2008a: as E. fallax ), Zaporizhzhia & Donetsk ( Bidzilya et al. 2001: as E. atrifasciella ), Donetsk ( Pak 1998a: as E. atrifasciella ), Luhansk ( Pak 1998a: as E. atrifasciella ; Pak & Yaroshenko 2001b: as E. atrifasciella ; Demyanenko et al. 2018: as E. fallax ) regions and Crimea ( Budashkin 2004: as E. fallax ), first records for Kyiv and Odesa regions.
Remark. Roesler (1988) synonymized Elegia atrifasciella with E. fallax , thus, records from Ukraine cited between 1988 and 2019 as E. fallax require verification, as Slamka (2019: 25) proved that E. atrifasciella is a distinct species. So far, we have not found E. fallax in the territory of Ukraine. All findings of these two species should be verified by examination of the genitalia. The recently described species from the Balkans, Elegia occultalis Plant, 2020 ( Plant et al. 2020) can be confused with the two abovementioned species, however, it is distinguished by the male genitalia. Elegia occultalis has not been found in Ukraine.
