Perennial, rhizomatous. Long submerged stems, sometimes rooting at the nodes. Vegetative leaves alternate, arising directly from the rhizome; flower-associated leaves opposite, 2 per node. Leaves floating, ovate-orbicular to orbicular, deeply cordate at base, margin sinuate to entire, abaxially densely glandular, 3–11 × 2–10 cm; inflorescence-associated petiole up to 10 cm long, with sheating base. Flowers in umbellate clusters of 2–7 in axils of leaves, bisexual, distylous, 5-merous. Calyx purple punctate, lanceolate, 5–15 mm long. Corolla yellow, lobes ovate, 15–25mm diam., at center with a longitudinal fold from base to apex, margins widely membranous and irregularly fimbriate. Stamens as many as petals; filaments 1–2 mm, inserted at the junction of the lobes. Pistil bottle-shaped; Style to 1 cm; stigma large, fleshy, 2-lobed with irregularly wrinkled margins. Capsule elliptic, long beak at the apex, 12–24 mm long. Seeds obovoid, flat, greyish-brown, 4–5.2 × 2.7–3.4 mm; 4–6 per capsule; dense ciliate on border.
