Planta speciosa inter Vriesea incurvata et V. carinata intermedia . A priore insuper differt habito minore, inflorescentia breviore (26.80 ± 4.00 cm); bracteis 10–11, minus numerosis; sepalis maculatis, macula usque ad 1 cm lata. A posteriore insuper discrepat foliis longioribus (facie V. incurvata ), bracteis floralibus magis numerosis latioribusque (12.80 ± 4.20 mm), macula sepalorum breviore. Nothospecies botanico amico Fernando Brüggemann dicata.
Holotypus:— BRAZIL. Santa Catarina: Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, Hotel Plaza Caldas da Imperatriz, Trilha da Cascata, floresta secundária, margens de rio encachoeirado, 287 m. a.s.l., 27º44'06.91''S 48º48'49.11''W, 13 November 2013, J.Z. Matos 150 (FLOR 38162!).
Epiphytic plant, short-acaulescent, 30–40 cm high in flowering time. Leaves 10–15 in a basal rosette, densely arranged, forming a tank, 14.5–40 × 3 cm in size (including sheath), outer leaves recurved; sheath 5–13 cm long, light green; blade dark green, narrowly oblong, obtuse and shortly apiculate at the apex. Inflorescence a simple spike; peduncle 13.9–15.5 cm long; spike 9–16.5 × 4–5 cm, erect, complanate. Floral bracts 10–20 in number, 3.5–4.3 × 0.9 cm, fully red to red with yellow stripes at the tips, carinate, incurved. Flowers 6–17, ca. 7 cm long, divergent at anthesis; sepals 2.4–2.9 cm long, cream-coloured with a red macula of about 0.4–1.1 cm long; petals 4.4–5.6 cm long, free but connivent for up to 4/5 of their length, cream-coloured in the basal half, but yellowish upwards with green curved apex; petal appendages 7.6–12 mm long, entire, obovate-oblong, rounded at the apex; stamens 4.8–6.2 cm long, exceeding the petals for ca. 7, 5 mm; anthers 6, 7 mm long, linear, yellow, dorsifixed up to 1, 8 mm from the base; ovary 6–7 mm long, cream-coloured; stigma 2.8 mm wide, of the convolute-blade II type ( Brown & Gilmartin 1984, 1989), dark green, exceeding the petals for ca. 1.2 cm.
Observations: —This new hybrid is mainly distinguished from its parents, V. incurvata by the smaller inflorescence, with lesser number of flowers. It differs from V. carinata by the larger rosette and larger erect inflorescence, as well as the greater size of floral bracts and number of flowers.
Vriesea × brueggemannii appears to be rare in Serra do Tabuleiro. It was found only in two sites of the study area, in which it occurred in vicinity with its parents, epiphytic on phorophytes and also on rocks, and always in fairly light open areas, near a pathway and a stream. Both sites include vegetation patches in different stages of regeneration (mostly capoeira and secondary forest).
