RESULTS Hyperxiphia funicornis (Konow)
( Figs. 1–5 View Figs )
Xiphydria funicornis Konow 1897: 306 . Palpixiphia funicornis: Maa 1949: 32 , Smith 1978: 110 (in catalog).
Hyperxiphia funicornis: Smith 2008: 54 , Taeger et al. 2010: 114.
Diagnosis.—Female. Head ( Figs. 4, 5 View Figs ) black with orbits and face below antennae yellow. Thorax ( Figs. 2, 3 View Figs ) black with spot on posterior margin of pronotum yellow. Legs yellow orange. Abdomen ( Fig. 1 View Figs ) yellow orange with first tergite and sheath black, second tergite yellow, and third and fourth tergites light black. Wings hyaline; veins and stigma black. Antenna with ~18 antennomeres. Frons with longitudinal carinae from about level of hind ocelli through frons and supraclypeal area. Labial palpus with 4 palpomeres; maxillary palpus with 5 palpomeres. Inner margins of eyes subparallel; lower interocular distance about 1.2 X eye height. Sheath ( Fig. 1 View Figs ) long, about 5X longer than broad, subequal in length to basal plate. Male unknown.
Material examined.— Chan Yoma, Birma, Coll.Konow, Typus, Holotypus, Xiphydria funicornis Knw , Birma, GBIF-GISHym 4446 (lectotype, SDEI); Lao, Hua Pham Prov ., Ban Saleui , Phou Pan Mt. , 20 ° 13'30"N / 103 ° 59'26"E, 1350-1900 m, 07.05.2011, leg. C. Holzschuh & locals (1 ♀, OLM); GoogleMaps same except 06.05.2011 (1 ♀, USNM); Lao, Prov. Hua Phan, Phou Pan, Umg. Ort Ban Saleui, 20 ° 13'30"N / 103 ° 59'26"E, 1350-1900 m, 15.04.2012, KJa , leg. C. Holzschuh & locals (1 ♀, OLM). GoogleMaps Distribution.— Laos, Myanmar.
Remarks.— Konow (1897) did not state how many specimens he had. The single specimen at SDEI is therefore considered a syntype and is here designated lectotype. It bears the labels as given in Specimens Examined above.
The mostly black thorax, largely yellow abdomen, entirely orange legs, and long slender sheath will distinguish this species. The lectotype is 11 mm long ( Konow 1897); the other three specimens are 13, 14, and 16 mm long. Konow (1897) stated that the antennae are “11-articulatis.” In the lectotype the antennae are broken with only the basal 10 antennomeres present, so the exact number remains unknown. Konow (1897) may not have recognized the apical antennomeres were missing. The three specimens examined from Laos have 18 antennomeres. The third and fourth abdominal tergites in the lectotype are darkened, but these are mostly orange in the specimens from Laos.
This is the first record of this species from Laos and the first record of collections of this species since the 1897 description.
