Leiella Enderlein 1910a: 200 View in CoL . Type-species, ochreocalcar Enderlein (orig. des.). Ref.— Lane 1954c (key to spp.).
L. catharinensis Lane 1954c: 451 View in CoL , fig. 2 (♂ terminalia). Type-locality: Brazil, Santa Catarina, Nova Teutônia. Holotype ♂, NHM.
( Figure 95 View FIGURES 88–99 )
Notes. The type series included only the male holotype. The labels with the holotype are: “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “HOLOTIPO [printed in black on a rose label with black border]” // “ Brasilien / Nova Teutonia / 27º 11’ S 52º 23’ W / Fritz Plaumann / 27.6.[hw]193[pr]8[hw]” // “Brit. Mus. / 1938-458 // [abdomen and male terminalia dissected and mounted between microslides attached to a pinned card]” // Leiella / catharinensis [hw] / det. John Lane 195[pr]2[hw]” / “BMNH(E) # 257283”. The holotype is in excellent condition GoogleMaps
L. distincta Freeman 1951: 79 View in CoL , fig. 303 (wing). Type-locality: Argentina, Río Negro, Bariloche. Holotype ♂, NHM. ( Figure 96 View FIGURES 88–99 )
Notes. The type series included the male holotype, nine male and sixteen female paratypes, of which the holotype, six male and fourteen female paratypes, and a paratype with missing terminalia are at the NHM. The labels with the holotype are: “ Leiella View in CoL / distincta View in CoL [hw] / Freeman. / HOLOTYPE ” [printed on red label]” // [male terminalia dissected on an acetate sheet] // “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // Bariloche. / 6–7.xi.1926. // “ Argentina: / Río Negro / F. & M. Edwards. / B.M. 1927–63.” // “BMNH(E) # / 254261”. The holotype is in good condition, the distal half of the abdomen having been removed and mounted with the terminalia mounted on an acetate sheet. The wing of one of the paratypes is mounted on a separate slide in the NHM Diptera View in CoL slide collection. The paratype collection numbers are BMNH(E) # 254262-82. It is probable that more than one species is represented in the type series, as there is large variation in the extension of the wing distal marking and the extension and intensity of the dark markings on the mesonotum .
L. fulva Lane 1954c: 452 View in CoL , fig. 3 (♂ terminalia). Type-locality: Brazil, Santa Catarina, Nova Teutônia. Holotype ♂, NHM.
( Figure 97 View FIGURES 88–99 )
Notes. The type series included the male holotype, a female allotype, and a female paratype, of which the holotype, in excellent condition, and the allotype, in bad condition (with the abdomen entirely missing and the base of only one wing preserved) are at the NHM. According to Lane (1954c), the paratype n. o 10.190 should have been returned to the British Museum. Apparently, a specimen at the MZUSP retained by John Lane was this female paratype. The labels with the holotype are: “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “HOLOTIPO [printed in black on a rose label with black border]” // “ Brasilien / Nova Teutonia / 27º 11’ S 52º 23’ W / Fritz Plaumann / 10.9.[hw]193[pr]8[hw]” // “Brit. Mus. / 1938-682 // [abdomen and male terminalia dissected and mounted between microslides attached to a pinned card]” // Leiella / fulva [hw] / det. John Lane 195[pr]2[hw]” / “BMNH(E) # 257284” GoogleMaps .
L. zonalis Edwards 1931: 259 View in CoL . Type-locality: Guyana, Berbice. Holotype ♀, NHM.
( Figure 98 View FIGURES 88–99 )
Notes. The type series included only the female holotype. The labels with the holotype are: “HOLO- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with red border]” // “ Leiella / zonalis Edw. [hw] / F.W. Edwards 193[pr]0[hw]” // Berbice, Brit. Guyana / October,1922 / e coll. M.D. Haviland / dd. Collegium Newnhamense // “Brit. Mus. / 1924-518” [hw] // “ HOLOTYPE [pr] / Leiella / zonalis [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1995 [pr]” // “BMNH(E) # / 254260”. The female holotype is in good condition and has not been dissected. Two additional identified specimens –one from Rio de Janeiro and another one from Costa Rica – show the same general colour pattern, but conspecificity should be confirmed based on terminalia examination.
