Leptomorphus Curtis View in CoL View at ENA
Leptomorphus Curtis 1831 View in CoL : pl. 365. Type-species, L. walkeri Curtis View in CoL (orig. des.). Ref.— Borkent & Wheeler 2012 (revision and phylogeny of the genus).
DIOMONUS Walker 1848: 87. Type-species, D. nebulescens Walker (mon.)
L. fasciculatus Edwards 1933: 305 View in CoL . Type-locality: Bolivia, Mapiri , Sarampiuní, 700 m. Holotype ♂, MTD. Ref.—
Borkent & Wheeler 2012: 30, redescription, figures 14 (habitus), 53 (wing), 80 (thorax), 101 (male terminalia),
142 (distribution map), 150 and 155 (phylogeny). ( Figure 24 View FIGURES 21–30 ) Notes. The type series included the male holotype , from Bolivia , and one male paratype , from Peru. The holotype is at the MTD Diptera collection ( Borkent & Wheeler 2012). The paratype , from Puerto Yessup , Peru, is at the NHM. The labels of the paratype (according to Borkent & Wheeler 2012) are: “ PERU, Pichis River, Puerto de Yessup, 1903”. The male terminalia is dissected and mounted, and one of the wings is glued to the micropin base. The male paratype is in good condition ( BMNH (E) # 257829). There is another specimen from Cartoon, British Guyana, which is darker and most certainly not conspecific with the paratype .
L. femoratus Edwards 1933: 306 View in CoL . Type-locality: Bolivia, Mapiri, Sarampiuní, 700 m. Holotype ♂, MTD. Ref.— Borkent & Wheeler 2012: 31 View Cited Treatment , redescription, figures 15 (habitus), 54 (wing), 102 (male terminalia), 143 (distribution map), 150 and 155 (phylogeny).
Notes. The type series included only the male holotype. In the original description of L. femoratus View in CoL , the typelocality is Mapiri, Bolivia and the only type –a male– is stated to be in the MTD. In the catalogue ( Papavero 1978: 50) the type-locality is mistakenly taken as “Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis” and the type indicated to be at the NHM. According to Borkent & Wheeler (2012), the male holotype is housed in the MTD and has the labels: “ Bolivia — Mapiri/ 13.3.[19]03/ Sarampioni 700 [green label]; Leptomorphus View in CoL / femoratus Edw. View in CoL / F.W. Edwards/ det. TYPE. 1933.; Staatl. Museum für/ Tierkunde Dresden/ Coll. W. SCHNUSE, 1911; HOLOTYPE ♂ / Leptomorphus femoratus View in CoL /Edwards / Det. C.J. Borkent, 2012 ”.
L. neivai Edwards 1940a: 452 View in CoL . Type-locality: Brazil, Santa Catarina, Nova Teutônia. Syntypes ♂ and ♀, NHM. Ref.— Borkent & Wheeler 2012: 49 View Cited Treatment , redescription, 50, lectotype designation, figures 29 (habitus), 65 (wing), 112 (male terminalia), 142 (distribution map), 150 and 155 (phylogeny).
( Figure 25 View FIGURES 21–30 )
Notes. The type series included three males and four females syntypes, of which two males, two females, and one type with the abdomen missing are at the NHM. Lectotype designation for this species was recently made by Borkent & Wheeler (2012). One of the paralectotype specimens has labels that read: “ Brasilien / Nova Teutonia / 27º 11’ S 52º 23’ W / Fritz Plaumann / 11.12.1937.” // “SYN- / TYPE” [printed in black on a rounded label with light blue border]” // “Brit. Mus. / 1938-40” // Leptomorphus / neivai Edw. [hw] / F.W. Edwards 1939” // “ SYNTYPE / Leptomorphus / neivai [hw] / det. J.E. Chainey, 1996” // “BMNH(E) # / 253835”. Other paralectotypes have identical labels except for numbers BMNH(E) # 253831-4. One of the female paralectotypes had the entire abdomen removed, kept in a small tube pinned together with the type; the abdomen of a male paralectotype was broken in two parts, but is glued to the micropin base. The wing of one of the paralectotypes is mounted on a slide in the NHM Diptera slide collection. GoogleMaps
