Rabula

Péringuey (1902) established Rabula Péringuey (1902: 886) for Rabula marqueza Péringuey, 1902 and Rabula morosa Péringuey, 1902 from Mozambique and South Africa, respectively ( Scarabaeidae : Hopliinae: Hopliini). Péringuey (1902) did not designate a type species. No additional species have been described.

However, the subgenus Rabula had been established within the genus Gymnothorax Bloch, 1795 by Jordan & Davis (1891: 590, type species Muraena aquaedulcis Cope, 1872 , by original designation) for a moray eel from the Pacific Coast of tropical America. There is confusion about its current status: Smith (2012) listed aquaedulcis as a synonym of Muraena lentiginosa Jenyns, 1842 , but also listed Rabula as one of many synonyms of Gymnothorax .

To resolve the homonymy, in accordance with Article 60 of the Code, we propose Perabula Allsopp & Schoolmeesters , replacement name as the replacement name for Rabula Péringuey nec Jordan & Davis. This results in two new combinations for the species currently included in this genus (see below).
