Nomenclatural remarks:— The type specimen of Psychotria dusenii Standl. was cited in the protologue as “ Brazil (State Paraná): Serra do Mar, Monte Alegre, alt. 1000 m. February 8, 1904, P. Dusén 3497 (Stockholm. Herb., type)”. However, more than one specimen of this collection, with different accession numbers, is deposited in S. There is also a fragment of this material deposited as a duplicate in F (catalogue number 614828, barcode V0070386F). Here, the sheet numbered S05-1071 is designated as lectotype of the name Palicourea roseocalycina ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ), and the collections S16-20707 (S) and V0070386F (F) are designated as isolectotypes.
There is a second sheet attached to Dusén 3497 ( S 05-1071 ) containing handmade drawings associated with the specimen. However , one of the three illustrations is attributed to another specimen from the same collector ( Dusén 3701; illustration to the left below), as mentioned in the protologue. We do not consider these drawings as original material nor as a type. In addition to the lectotype and isolectotypes, we also analyzed the paratypes ( S 16-20708 , S 16- 20709 ), which were cited in the protologue.
Morphological remarks:— Palicourea roseocalycina ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ) is characterized by slender branches, pink inflorescences and flowers, persistent tubular calyx, blue drupes, and also bifid stipules becoming truncated on mature branches. Due to these characteristics, this species belongs to Psychotria subgenus Heteropsychotria and Psychotria section Solenocalyx Müller Argoviensis (1889: 266–269) , which includes Psychotria glaziovii Müller Argoviensis (1889: 267) , Psychotria fluminensis Vellozo (1825: 30) , Psychotria megalocalyx Müller Argoviensis (1889: 268) , and Psychotria ulei Standley (1936: 252–253) . All species in Psychotria subgenus Heteropsychotria have yet to be formally transferred to Palicourea . Palicourea roseocalycina differs from these species due to the color and shape of the inflorescences, which are pink, tri-flowered simple or compound dichasia, whereas P. megalocalyx presents white flowers arranged in capituliform inflorescences, and P. glaziovii , P. fluminensis , and P. ulei present white flowers arranged in lax pauciflorous inflorescences.
Distribution:— Palicourea roseocalycina is endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, occurring at ca. 1000 m, in the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina.
