Basionym:— Trapa globosa Ludwig (1860: 141–142; pl. 58, figs 23–27; pl. 60, fig. 6–7)

Type (lectotype,designated here):— GERMANY. Hesse:Bad Salzhausen near Nidda in Vogelsberg: MfN,coll.Ludwig [ MB.Pb.2005/0689.1 (orig.-no. 126)!], illustrated in: Ludwig (1860: pl. 58, fig. 23) and Kirchheimer (1936: pl. 9, fig. 2b).

Stratigraphy:—Middle Miocene (Langhian) brown-coal of intravolcanic deposits (“Carpolithen-Kohle von Salzhausen”).

Occurrence and habitat:—Known from the Miocene of central Europe in wetland environments.

Additional specimens examined (syntypes):— GERMANY. Hesse: Bad Salzhausen near Nidda in Vogelsberg ; middle Miocene (Langhian) brown-coal of intravolcanic sediment-deposits (“ Carpolithen-Kohle von Salzhausen ”): MfN, coll. Ludwig [ MB.Pb.2005/0689.2–9]!, illustrated in: Ludwig (1860: pl. 58, fig. 24–27) and Kirchheimer (1936: pl. 9, fig. 2), MfN [ MB.Pb.2017/1470] !.

Fossil-genus Carpolithes Brongn. in Cuvier (1822: 319)

Generic type:— Carpolithes ovulum Brongniart in Cuvier (1822a: 616; pl. 11, fig. 6. 1822b: 364).

Carpolithus Linnaeus (1768: 172) , nom. illeg., published before Dec. 31 1820, starting date for fossil-taxa (Art. 13.1 of the ICN; McNeill et al. 2012).

Carpolites Sternberg (1823: 39) , nom. nud.

Carpolites Sternberg (1838: 208) , nom. illeg., non Carpolithes Brongn. in Cuvier (1822: 319) (Art. 54.1 of the ICN; McNeill et al. 2012).

Stratigraphic range:—Devonian to Neogene.

Note:— Carpolithus Brongn. is a widely used fossil taxon in palaeobotanical literature for fossil fruits and seeds of unknown taxonomical affinity because of the lack of characteristic morphological and anatomical traits.
