Locality and type material. Holotype female, allotype and 3 paratype females: Entre Ríos, Chajarí, Taue (30°45'44.3''S, 58°0'53''W), 5-V-2007, on Solanum americanum, A. D. Guanilo , deposited at Escola Superior de Agricultura “Luiz de Queiroz”, Universidade de São Paulo, Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil (ESALQ-USP). Three paratype females, same collection data as holotype, deposited at “Fundación Miguel Lillo”, Tucumán, Argentina.

Etymology. The name argentinus refers to Argentina, the country of origin of the type specimens of this species.

Remarks. This new species is similar to Neoseiulus plumosus Denmark & Muma, Neoseiulus tunus ( De Leon) and Neoseiulus neotunus ( Denmark & Muma) but differs mainly by the absence of macrosetae on all legs. In addition N. neotunus differs by having setae j1, z5, Z4, Z5 and S5 approximately 1.7, 1.4, 0.7 and 0.7 times as long as in this new species; N. plumosus differs by having setae S4, S5 and z2 approximately 1.7, 2.8 and 1.5 times as long as in this new species; and N. tunus differs by having the setae Z5 and S5 approximately 0.7 and 1.6 times as long as in this new species. N. argentinus n. sp. belongs to the tunus species subgroup of the cucumeris species group, as defined by Chant & McMurtry (2003a).

Previous records. Argentina [Tucumán ( Furtado et al. 2007)], Algeria, Australia, Brazil, Canary Islands, Cape Verde, China, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guinea, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Reunion Island, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine, West Bank and Yemen.

Remarks. No additional specimens of this species were found in this study. Neoseiulus chascomensis (Sheals) was described based only on the holotype, collected in Buenos Aires, Argentina. No further specimens of this species have been reported in the literature. N. tranversus is known only from the holotype, the allotype and a specimen reported by Furtado et al. (2007) from Argentina. Ragusa & Athias-Henriot (1973) considered N. chascomensis to differ from N. barkeri and N. tranversus Denmark & Muma by having gland pore “gd2” present, by the different lengths of setae z2 and s4 and macrosetae on tarsus IV, as well as by the different shapes of the ventri-anal shield and of the spermatheca. These differences could represent intra-specific variations. A conclusion in relation to the possible synonymy among those species would require the collection of additional specimens of N. chascomensis and N. transversus .
