Diagnosis. Alate, pale Amphorophora with femora scabrous on less than distal half; swollen portion of siphunculi about twice wider than dark proximal portion beneath flange, length 2.2 × cauda; R IV+V 1.2 × HT II and 0.4 × antennal VI BASE, antennal PT/BASE 3.4; secondary rhinaria on antennal segments: III 59, IV 16, V 17.

Distribution and ecology. Widespread Holarctic species, it was known from most Central European countries. Holocyclic and monoecious on ferns but known from several species of fern genera. In Hungary, the only fern-feeding aphid hitherto reported is Idiopterus nephrelepidis Davis, 1909 , collected on exotic ferns in greenhouses (Ripka 2008). The Hungarian specimens of A. ampullata were collected in wet deciduous forests dominated by beech, beaten from the male fern, Dryopteris filix-mas (L.) Schott. We found it only in the Alpine foothills (Kőszeg and Sopron Mts), despite collecting efforts in similar habitats in different Hungarian ranges. Taxonomic characters of North Macedonian specimens were recently illustrated ( Murányi 2018b), so herein we illustrate only the habitus and habitat.
