Selenophorus breviusculus Horn View in CoL ( Fig. 48 View Figs )
Selenophorus breviusculus Horn 1880: 181 View in CoL . Type locality: Oklahoma ( Fort Cobb , Caddo Co.) . Types: MCZ #34543, CMNH.
Descriptive Notes. Pronotum (except disc) and elytra (except interval 1) densely, coarsely punctate with moderately long setae. Pronotum proportionately wide, sides broadly rounded, without trace of hind angles. Pronotum and elytra with distinct microsculpture, slightly transverse on elytra. Dorsum with bronze luster. Coloration of palps, antennomeres 1–2, and legs testaceous. Frons rugose, glabrous. Elytra with stria 8 more distant from margin than from stria 7. ABS1 short. Dimorphism + ♂ 1 — ♀ 2. Median lobe evenly curved; dorsoapical plate straight, longer than wide, sides subparallel, tip faintly swollen with slightly raised dorsal lip. Endophallus with 9 spines packed loosely and randomly: 1 large spine behind left side of basal bulb, 4 medium spines in middle, 4 tiny spines near ostium. ABL 6.0– 6.5 mm.
Range. USA: sKS, cwOK, neTX.
Remarks. This rare precinctive species was not listed by Noonan (1985a) in his classification of Selenophori nor has it been redescribed in the literature since Casey (1914: 153) struggled with its taxonomic position. Unlike other selenophorines of the Nearctic, S. breviusculus has its elytra densely covered by setae except for interval 1 which is notably glabrous. It is likely not taxonomically near the setigerous members of Athrostictus based on the simple form of its median lobe and different kind of endophallic armature. In future studies this beetle will likely find placement in a separate monobasic subgenus of Selenophorus (G. E. Ball and D. Shpeley, personal communication, 2016). For our purposes, S. breviusculus is placed in the breviusculus species group under subgenus Selenophorus .
