Bothriomyrmex meridionalis Rog. var. communista Santschi, 1919b: 206 , Pl. II, Fig. 2, w.
Current status: Bothriomyrmex communista . Raised to species: Emery 1925b: 10.
Type locality(-ies): “ Russie: Crimée (Karawayew leg.), w”.
Original Karawajew labels: 3 w, “Magaratsh, / Tauria. / Rjasanzev, / 26.III.1903 ”, “ Bothriomyrmex meridionalis Rog. / v. communista / Santschi, typus”, “ Syntypus ”, “ Bothriomyrmex / communista / Santschi / Dubovikoff det.”, “non typus”[the latter written by Dubovikoff]; 3 w, “Magaratsh, / Tauria. / Rjasanzev, / 26.III.1903 ”, “ Bothriomyrmex meridionalis Rog. / v. communista / Santschi, typus”, “ Syntypus ”, “non typus / Dubovikoff”.
Material: PARALECTOTYPES, 6 w ( CASENT0917115 ) (Box 28) .
Notes. Santschi (1919b) described B. meridionalis var. communista based on workers collected in Crimea by Karawajew, but he did not provide exact locality information, the number of studied specimens or Karawajew’s sample number. Later Dubovikoff designated one specimen with the labels “Crimée / Karawajew”, “ Bothriomyrmex / meridionalis v. communista / type w Sants.”, “Sammlung / Dr. F. Santschi / Kairouan” (CASENT0911470), preserved in the collection of the Natural History Museum Basel ( Switzerland) as the lectotype, and the second specimen with the same label as the paralectotype (these data were first published by Seifert in 2012). We also found 51 workers with Karawajew’s original label “ Bothriomyrmex / meridionalis Rog. / v. communista Sant. / Typus: Santschi / Магарачъ, 26.III.1903. / РЯЗанцевъ. № 1600” [Magarach, Ryazantsev] in the collection of the Natural History Museum of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kiev) (CASENT0916756) ( Martynov & Radchenko 2016), as well as the above-mentioned workers from Karawajew’s collection in SIZK. Based on Recommendation 72B of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999), we conclude these specimens are part of the type series and are paralectotypes.
