Philemon novaeguineae trivialis Salomonsen View in CoL

Philemon novaeguineae trivialis Salomonsen, 1966a: 9 View in CoL (Collingwood Bay, north coast of southeastern New Guinea).

Now Philemon buceroides novaeguineae (Müller, 1843) View in CoL . See Salomonsen, 1967: 409, Coates, 1990: 252–254, Schodde and Mason, 1999: 289–290, Dickinson, 2003: 436, and Higgins et al., 2008: 680–681.

HOLOTYPE: AMNH 697135 About AMNH , adult male, collected at Collingwood Bay , Oro Province, Papua New Guinea, on 28 June 1897 (not 1894, as in description), by Albert S. Meek (no. 670). From the Rothschild Collection.

COMMENTS: Salomonsen (1966: 9) cited the AMNH number of the holotype in the original description and gave the known range as Collingwood Bay and the Kumusi River. Paratypes are: Kumusi River, females, AMNH 697131 About AMNH , 11 June 1907 ; AMNH 697132 About AMNH , 26 May 1907 ; Haidana , male, AMNH 697134 About AMNH , 18 April 1907 .

Coates (1990: 254) apparently included trivialis in the range of P. buceroides novaeguineae , without comment; Dickinson (2003: 436) recognized it. Given the small size of the type series for this form, the great variability among individuals of this species, and the questionable location of Haidana (see Le- Croy, 2008: 216), it seems unlikely that this form should be recognized.
