TYPE LOCALITY: Brazil, Para, S. bank Rio Amazonas .

DISTRIBUTION: Amazonian region of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia; perhaps Bolivia.

COMMENT: Subgenus Atelocynus ; see Cabrera, 1958:236; Van Gelder, 1978:8, but also see Hershkovitz, 1961, Fieldiana Zool., 39:505-523. Corbet and Hill, 1980:93, listed this species in Dusicyon . HEE, KLA, and AL consider Atelocynus a distinct genus.
