Common name. Torndirrup Heath-loving Katydid

Holotype male. ( In alcohol). 1. “Australia Western Australia Albany, Torndirrup N. P. Isthmus Hills /Flinders Peninsula 13.iv.1989 leg. K.-G. Heller M. Volleth ”. 2. “ ANIC database #14008745” . Holotype in Australian National Insect Collection, Canberra. Paratype. Western Australia. A nymph with the following data is placed here provisionally: 35 o 03’S 117 o 32’E 32 km W. of Albany , 14.ii.1980 (DCF Rentz, Stop 52, 1 last instar female, ANIC) GoogleMaps .

Type locality. The type was collected in a typical heath habitat. The female from 32 km W. of Albany was found on an area of white sand with Lomandra and other plants under tall eucalypts. The area had been previously burnt.

Differential diagnosis. Male. Antenna slightly longer than length of body. Eye round, bulging, positioned high on head. Hind tibia armed dorsally with numerous spines, often alternating in lengths ( Fig. 5I View FIG ); apex with a pair of small subapical spurs; ventral spurs more elongate and more apical in position. Prothorax with spines very slender, widely separated; meso- and metathoracic processes short, knob-like. Tegmen short, ( Table 1 View TABLE 1 , Fig. 5F View FIG ), stridulatory file positioned on blister. Cercus ( Figs 5D, E View FIG ) robust, apically acute and curving, internal margin with a stout spine and an excavation; base of cercus with a short slender projection ( Fig. 5E View FIG ) directed inwards, surface clothed with stiff brown setae. Abdomen with broad, soft U-shaped median area; supra-anal plate short, broad; paraproct short, stout apically divergent ( Fig. 5A View FIG ); phallic complex ( Fig. 5G View FIG ) with a short, triangular sclerotised process on each side, median tongue-like portion lightly sclerotised and with stout setae. Subgenital plate ( Fig. 5H View FIG ) short, broad, median incision broadly V-shaped, style very short, in length much less than length of one side of median incision.

Female. Unknown

Colouration. Overall colour much like other species ( Fig. 5F View FIG ); median stripe broad, prominent.

This species known only from the holotype.

Distribution. Known only from the type locality and one other location. ( Map 1 View MAP ).

Habitat. Heath on sand with scattered tall eucalypts.

Seasonal occurrence. The holotype was collected in mid-April.

Song. Not recorded.

Karyotype. Unknown.

Recognition. This species is characterised by its relatively small size ( Table 1 View TABLE 1 ) and distinctive male genitalia.

Discussion. This species is distinct and probably has habits similar to others in Australiagraecia .
