Range: —Andes from Ecuador to Bolivia (BE, CO, LP, SC); southeastern Brazil.
Ecology: —Fairly common; open, disturbed habitats such as on landslides and along roadcuts, but also found in secondary and disturbed forests; 200–1450(2750) m.
Notes: —Segments abaxially with a mixture of arachnoid scales (as in S. bifidus ) and fibrillose scales (as in S. lanuginosus ). Overall, a fairly small species with short pinnae and somewhat lanceolate distal branches. Variable, and intermediate specimens with S. bifidus , S. ferrugineus , and S. nigropaleaceus suggest hybridization.
