Range: —Andes of southern Ecuador to Bolivia (CO, LP).

Ecology: —Fairly common; forms dense colonies in cloud forests, elfin forests, or on exposed ridges; 2000–3400 m.

Notes:— Most specimens of this species have distinctive, black fungal bodies to 1 mm long on the abaxial segment surfaces. Differs from S. melanoblastus by more widely divergent veinlets that are not raised, presence of pseudostipules, deeply pinnatifid segments, and hyaline, ciliate scale margins.
