Range: —Southeastern U.S.A.; Antilles; southern Mexico to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, SC, TA), Paraguay, and Brazil.
Ecology: —Common; terrestrial on ridges, open slopes, forest edges, road banks, and streamsides, in humid forests; (350) 750–2800 m.
Notes: —May be conspecific with Dicranopteris linearis (Burm. f.) Underw. of the Old World tropics.
