Type species. Ceratopogon vitiosus Winnertz, 1852 ; by original designation.

Diagnosis. Fourth palpal segment with one seta or without (rarely with two); wing with both first radial cells reduced, vein M2 usually absent, wing membrane without macrotrichia; one, rarely two seminal capsules ( Wirth & Grogan 1988, de Meillon & Wirth 1991).
