Type species. Ceratopogon vitiosus Winnertz, 1852 ; by original designation.

Diagnosis. Eyes pubescent, contiguous; antennal flagellum usually with 13 flagellomeres, first flagellomere with sensilla coeloconica. In male flagellomeres 4–11 usually fused, distal 3 flagellomeres elongate; katepisternum of thorax with at least one seta; femora unarmed, usually slender ( Wirth & Grogan 1988, de Meillon & Wirth 1991). This worldwide- distributed genus includes 200 species ( Borkent 2015).
