Thyestetha carbonaria Faust 1898: 194 View in CoL f. (type locality: Fergusson Isl.).
Diagnosis. Pronotum densely punctate with small punctures, black. Elytra dark ferruginous, almost black, with distinct small punctures, interstices 2– 4 X diameter of punctures ( Figs. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 9 , 10 View FIGURES 10 – 18 ). Rostral canal with scattered white scales. Dorsal squamose line of metafemur moderately dense. Aedeagus ( Figs. 37–38 View FIGURES 37 – 54 ) with apex strongly curved ventrad, medially slightly extended ( Fig. 43 View FIGURES 37 – 54 ).
Redescription. Lectotype, male. Length. Pronotum + elytra: 4.6 mm. Color. Antenna, rostrum and tarsi ferruginous; pronotum black; head, elytra, pleural sclerites, legs and ventral surface dark ferruginous, almost black. Habitus subovate, in dorsal view almost without constriction between pronotum and elytra ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 9 ); profile dorsally with shallow constriction between pronotum and elytron ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 10 – 18 ).
Rostrum 5.6 X as long as wide at base; base coarsely punctate, base dorsally with scattered scales. Head. Vertex coarsely punctate, few white scales near eye.
Prothorax 1.2 X wider than long; disc uniformly densely punctate with small punctures, basally slightly sparser, punctures slightly smaller near pronotal base (in front of basal row of coarse punctures), interstices smooth, polished; sides densely punctate with larger punctures; postocular lobe foveate-rugose; marginal carina externally along edge with few whitish scales; rostral canal with scattered long setae and between procoxae with whitish scales.
Elytra as long as wide; sides rounded; apex slightly extended, jointly rounded; punctures of striae 1–9 distinctly impressed from base to apex; interstices between punctures 2– 4 X wider than diameter of punctures, punctures closer to each other apically, interstices between punctures of stria 9 ca. 0.5 X diameter of puncture. Metanepisternum 2.8 X wider than high.
Thoracic venter. Meso- and metaventrite laterally with sparse whitish scales; metaventrite submedially behind mesocoxa with pair of moderate protrusions. Pro- and mesocoxa densely punctate, squamose; metacoxa with scales near femoral insertion; trochanter with sparse, coarse punctures containing small scales. Distance between mesocoxae subequal to width of mesocoxa.
Legs. Femora moderately punctate, scales laterally slender, dorsally broader; metafemur with denser scaling, dorsal squamose line moderately dense; anteroventral ridges weakly developed; with posteroventral ridge in apical third abruptly ending and markedly protruding proximally (Fig. 26).
Abdomen. Ventrite 1 and 2 coarsely punctate, laterally squamose, anterior margin of ventrite 2 smooth; remaining ventrites subglabrous.
Terminalia. Aedeagus ( Figs. 37, 38, 43 View FIGURES 37 – 54 ). Apex rounded, strongly curved ventrad, sides weakly sinuate; lateral orificial sclerites medium-sized, inner portion ca. 2 X longer than outer portion; anterior median orificial sclerite simple between 2nd and 3rd fold (as in Fig. 36 View FIGURES 29 – 36 ). Dorsal contour of transfer apparatus sharply incised at middle, ventral contour angularly projecting; sclerites in basal half, dorsoventrally flattened, moderately distant, in apical half contiguous. Sclerotized part of ventral membrane extending proximad 0.82 X length of aedeagal body from insertion of apodemes.
Female paralectotype. Same as lectotype except: Rostrum 5.60 X longer than wide. Prothorax 1.26 X longer than wide. Elytra 1.04 X longer than wide; extreme apex slightly more slender. Metafemur without concavity basal to stridulatory patch, posteroventral ridge not protruding.
Intraspecific variation. Size: Length 4.5–4.6 mm (n=2, x = 4.6 mm) in males. White squamose line on dorsal surface of metafemora more or less distinct.

Distribution ( Fig. 71 View FIGURE 71 ). Milne Bay Prov. (Fergusson Isl.).
Notes. For this study, three syntypes of T. carbonaria from Milne Bay and Fergusson Island were available. One of them belongs to a different species described below as T. oblita sp. n., Therefore, a lectotype is designated to ensure stability of nomenclature. FAUST (1898) did not specify the exact number of specimens examined. One or more paralectotypes from the Trobriand Islands, we were unable to locate.
