Type:— TURKEY: Edirne, A 1 E, Centre, between Budakdoganca and Ahiköy villages, first degree military forbidden zone, II. Mehmetcik station environs, 41°47’24”N, 26°21’34”, elevation: 110 m, 06 June 2015, M.Aybeke, (holotype, EDTU 15050).

Description: —Pilose perennial herbs, stem suberect to erect, up to 45 50 cm, adpressed pubescent with pilose hairs app. 1 mm and patent ( FIGURE 1A View FIGURE 1 ); leaves 2.5 times shorter than peduncle, imparipinnate, leaflets entire, old rachis not spiny, not arranged in zigzag fashion, 10 12 pairs, oblanceolate-oblong, 13–14 mm × 2.5–4.0 mm, lower leaflets smaller than others, 9–10 mm × 3 mm ( FIGURES 1 B–C View FIGURE 1 ), adpressed pilose above and below; internodes longer than stipules; stipules united in the middle, up to three quarter parts. Inflorescence an axillary pedunculated raceme ( FIGURE 1D View FIGURE 1 ); bracts present, membranous, up to 1/3 of calyx, distinctly mid-veined, ovate-lanceolate, subulate tipped; bracteoles present, smaller than bracts; calyx teeth equal, linear to subulate, adpressed pilose; tube 2 times as long as tube of others; corolla white; wing shorter than the vexillum and the keel; keel truncate and glabrous 8–11 mm, standard shorter than keel up to 1.5–2.0 mm ( FIGURES 2 A–F View FIGURE 2 ); stamens diadelphous, 9+1, anthers uniform; ovary 1- 2-ovuled; fruit indehiscent, slightly compressed, disc kidney shaped, without hooks, teeth on the crest and disc 5 mm, covered with pilose hairs, margin 2–3 teeth ( FIGURES 3 A–F View FIGURE 3 ), and 1 seeded.

Comments: —This new taxa is closely related to Onobrychis alba (Waldst. et Kit.) Desv. (1814: 83) and O. degenii Dörfler (1897: 718) , but the differences in the features have been indicated below ( TABLE 1).

Etymology:— O. mehmetchiquii is named both on behalf of the name of locality where the plant was found and also dedicated to Turkish heroine soldiers (Mehmetçik) for the sake of independence.

Distribution and ecology:—It is a Mediterranean element, currently known to be only from A1 (E) Edirne Budakdoðanca village. Plants grow in soil on the roadside, where traffic is not too busy, and under Quercus L. (1753: 994) trees, at elevation of 100– 250m.
