The tropical fowl mite, Ornithonyssus bursa (Berlese) , is a common associate of birds and can harm humans in areas with high bird populations ( Denmark and Cromroy, 2012). These two macronyssid species, O. bacoti and O. bursa , are very close morphologically; however, a few different morphological characteristics are present. The former has distinctly longer dorsal setae ( Figure 9 View Figures 9–14 ), sternal shield entirely with network-like striations ( Figure 10 View Figures 9–14 ), and opisthogastric area surrounding anal shield hypertrichous ( Figure 11 View Figures 9–14 ), while the latter has dorsal setae shorter ( Figure 12 View Figures 9–14 ), sternal shield with only transverse parallel striations ( Figure 13 View Figures 9–14 ), and opisthogaster hypotrichous ( Figure 14 View Figures 9–14 ).
