Glyphonycteris behnii View in CoL
French: Glyphonyctére de Behn / German: Behn-GroRohrblattnase / Spanish: Glifonicterio de Behn
Other common names: Behn's Bat, Behn's Graybeard Bat
Taxonomy. Schizostoma behnii Peters, 1865 View in CoL ,
“Cuyaba [= Cuiaba],” Mato Grosso, Brazil .
Species of Glyphonycteris were previously in the genus Micronycteris . It has been suggested by some authors that the species G. behnii might be a junior synonym of G. sylvestris . Monotypic.
Distribution. C Brazil (Tocantins, S Mato Grosso, SW Goias, and Minas Gerais). The few records from Cusco region, SE Peru, reported in the literature do not correspond to G. behnii . They might prove to be a smaller form of G. silvestris, which is associated with humid forests. View Figure
Descriptive notes. Tail 9-5 mm, ear 14-14-8 mm, hindfoot 9-8-10-5 mm, forearm 45— 47 mm. No specific data are available for head-body length and body weight. Behn'’s Big-eared Batis a medium-sized and least known species of Glyphonycteris . Dorsal pelage is dark gray to reddish, and venteris paler. Each hair has white base, reddish brown proximal medium band, another distal medium pale buff band, and darker reddish brown to gray tip. Tocantins specimens had tricolored dorsal hairs and distinct pattern of bands: gray base, intermediate reddish-brown band, and gray tip. External ears are completely separated and not bound by membrane as in Micronycteris . Calcaris shorter than foot. Upper incisors are not markedly grooved. Dental formula is 1 2/2, C 1/1, P2/3.M3/3 (x2) =34.
Habitat. Cerrado Biome, perhaps restricted to dry cerrado habitats including rockyfields.
Food and Feeding. There is no information available on the diet of Behn’s Big-eared Bat, but it might be inferred based on insectivorous diets, complemented occasionally by fruits, of its congeners, Davies’s Big-eared Bat (G. daviesi ) and the Tricolored Bigeared Bat ( G. sylvestris ).
Breeding. No information.
Activity patterns. No information.
Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information.
Status and Conservation. Classified as Data Deficient on The IUCN Red List. Behn’s Big-eared Bat is rarely captured. It has been recorded only in protected areas in Brazil (e.g. Jalapao State Park).
