Type:— CHINA. Guangxi: Dayao Shan, Kuchun, 27 June 1931 (not 1937 as given by Wang (2001a) in the protologue), S.S. Sin 23329 (holotype IBSC, not seen).

Description:—Vines woody. Branches shallowly longitudinally 10-grooved. Leaves usually ternate, rarely simple; petiole 2–11 cm long, sparsely puberulous, glabrescent; leaflet blades ovate, elliptic-ovate, or narrowly ovate, 3.5–12 (–14) cm long, 1.5–5 (–9.5) cm broad, subleathery to papery, both surfaces sparsely puberulous, glabrescent, adaxially smooth or rarely finely rugose, base rounded, subcordate, or broadly cuneate, margin entire, apex acuminate to acute; basal veins abaxially prominent. Cymes axillary or terminal, usually panicle-like and many-flowered, rarely few-flowered; peduncle 2.6–7.5 cm long, sparsely puberulous; bracts subulate, 3.5–6 mm long. Flowers 1.6–2.5 cm in diameter. Pedicel 0.6–1.6 cm long, puberulous or rarely glabrous, mostly 2-bracteolate below the middle; bracteoles very small, 0.5–0.8 mm long. Sepals 4, white, or rarely pinkish outside, narrowly oblong to lanceolate, 8–13 mm long, 2.2–4 cm broad, both surfaces glabrous. Stamens 5–9.5 mm long, glabrous; anther narrowly oblong to linear, 3–5.5 mm long, apex minutely apiculate. Ovaries puberulous. Styles 5–9 mm long, densely villous. Achenes falcate-lanceolate, 5–6– 7.5 cm long, sparsely puberulous; persistent style 2–4 cm long, yellow plumose.

Phenology:—Flowering from June to August; fruiting from August to October.

Distribution and habitat:— Clematis meyeniana is widely distributed in eastern and southeastern Asia, including China, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam. In China, it occurs in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hong Kong, Hunan, Jiangxi, Macao, Taiwan, Yunnan, and Zhejiang ( Fig. 23 View FIGURE 23 ), growing in bushes or sparse forests, or by streams at elevations of 20−1800 m above sea level.

Notes:—When Sprague (1916) described C. meyeniana f. retusa as new, he did not cite any specimen under it. In the protologue, he gave the information of provenance of C. meyeniana f. retusa as “Locality unknown. The plant is stated to have been received from the Hongkong Botanic Garden in 1885” and cited “ C. Meyeniana , Hook. f. Bot. Mag. t. 7897, excl. syn.” immediately following the Latin diagnosis. According to Hooker (1903), “the specimen figured was from a plant received from Mr. C. Ford, Superintendent of the Hongkong Botanic Garden, in 1855”. This suggests that a specimen of C. meyeniana f. retusa should be kept at K. However, we have been unable to trace the specimen from K. If the specimen cannot be found at K or any other herbaria, the line illustration in Hooker (1903), which was excellently executed, seems to be considered the type of C. meyeniana f. retusa to guarantee the correct application of this name. It is worth mentioning that Hooker’s (1903) concept of C. meyeniana , which includes C. armandi as a synonym, is too broad indeed, and Sprague (1916) correctly excluded C. armandi from the synonymy of C. meyeniana .

Under Clematis meyeniana , a variety, i.e. var. granulata Finet & Gagnepain (1903) , has been generally recognized ( Finet & Gagnepain 1907, Sprague 1916, Chun 1934, Handel-Mazzetti 1939, How & Wang 1964, Anonymous 1972, 1984, Chang 1980, Wang 1991, 2003, Grey-Wilson 2001, Johnson 2001, Wang & Bartholomew 2001, Yang et al. 2015). This variety, described from the Hainan Island of China, is different from the type variety, var. meyeniana , by having leaflets finely rugose on upper side. Chun (1934) noted that “The var. granulata is easily distinguished from C. meyeniana Walp. by the granulated obscurely veined leaves, much smaller flowers, and especially by the very slender, almost filiform pedicels, an important distinction not mentioned by Finet & Gagnepain.” This variety is widely distributed in China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, southeastern Yunnan), Laos, and Vietnam.

The identity of Clematis meyeniana var. insularis Sprague (1916: 46) has been a controversial matter. Sprague described it on the basis of four collections respectively from China (Taiwan), Japan (Ryukyu Islands), and the Philippines (Luzon), with the K sheet of the Taiwan collection, R. Oldham 1 ( Fig. 22 View FIGURE 22 ), designated as the type. In the protologue, Sprague stated that C. meyeniana var. insularis was distinguishable by the glabrous inflorescence often racemose or 3-flowered, and the sepals obviously longer than the stamens and mucronate. Eichler (1958), Grey-Wilson (2001), Johnson (2001), and Wang (2001b) recognized C. meyeniana var. insularis as an independent taxon, but Merrill & Rolfe (1908), Ohwi (1965), Liu & Hsieh (1976), Yang & Huang (1995), Tamura (1997), and Yang (2009), reduced it to the synonymy of C. meyeniana . Wang (2003), however, placed C. meyeniana var. insularis in synonymy with C. finetiana . In the same paper, Wang (2003) proposed a new combination, C. finetiana var. lutchuensis ( Koidzumi 1925: 14) Wang (2003: 127) based on C. lutchuensis Koidzumi (1925: 14), a name published based on material from Japan and previously treated as a synonym of C. meyeniana var. insularis by Eichler (1958), Grey-Wilson (2001), Johnson (2001), and Wang (2001b). According to Wang (2003), the plants from Luzon, Taiwan and Ryukyu Islands previously referred to C. meyeniana or C. meyeniana var. insularis should belong to C. finetiana var. lutchuensis . After checking many relevant specimens, here we accept the treatment of placing C. meyeniana var. insularis in synonymy with C. meyeniana . In C. meyeniana , the sepals are from obtuse to mucronate at apex, and the pedicels, as pointed out by Yang & Huang (1995), are from pubescent to glabrous.

Clematis meyeniana var. uniflora Wang (1998: 158) was described on the basis of a single specimen, Longxishan Exped. 1528 (PE, not shown here), from Jiangle county in Fujian, China. In the protologue, the author stated that it differed from the type variety, var. meyeniana , by having 1-flowered axillary cymes. Since its description, C. meyeniana var. uniflora has been recognized as an independent taxon by Grey-Wilson (2001), Wang & Bartholomew (2001), and Wang (2003), although Wang (2003) still cited only the holotype. As the material of C. meyeniana var. uniflora is very scanty, we put the problem with its identity aside for a further study.

In the taxonomic treatment given above, we have only cited the synonyms of Clematis meyeniana published from Chinese material, not including those published from non-Chinese material. Clematis hothae Kurz (1877: 17) , which was described from Hotha in Myanmar, has been generally placed in synonymy with C. meyeniana since its description ( Sprague 1916, Grey-Wilson 2001, Johnson 2001, Wang 2003). We have checked the original material of this name at Kew and we accept this treatment. Clematis craibiana Lace (1915: 395) , which was also described from Myanmar, was reduced to the synonymy of C. meyeniana by Sprague (1916) (he specifically placed C. craibiana in synonymy with C. meyeniana f. major ), a treatment accepted by Handel-Mazzetti (1939), Grey-Wilson (2001), Johnson (2001), and Wang (2003). This treatment, however, may not be correct. From the type material of C. craibiana ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 ), it can be seen that no bracteoles are borne on most of the pedicels, a fairly constant character in C. meyeniana as we have mentioned above. In addition, C. craibiana was recorded to flower in March on the field labels of the type specimens, while C. meyeniana usually flowers from June to August. The absence of bracteoles on pedicels in C. craibiana and the flowering period in spring remind us of C. armandi , a species widely distributed in China, Myanmar, and Vietnam, and C. jialasaensis Wang in Wang & Li (1986: 268) described from China’s southeastern Xizang (Mêdog). Although C. armandi may at once be distinguished from C. craibiana and C. jialasaensis by the presence of large scale-leaves at the base of inflorescences, this character is not always present on the specimens of this species, which usually include only a certain portion of a plant. In our survey of specimens of C. armandi , we found that scale-leaves are indeed often absent at the base of inflorescences in this species. Further studies are needed to determine the identities of C. craibiana and C. jialasaensis with certainty.

Similar to the case with the identity of C. craibiana is the problem with the identification of two collections, J.M. Delavay 4 (P; Fig. 25A View FIGURE 25 ) and J.M. Delavay 5146 (P; Fig. 25B, C View FIGURE 25 ), respectively from Tchen-fong-chan (Chengfeng Shan) and Long-ki both formerly belonging to Yanjin county but now Shuifu county in northeastern Yunnan, China. Franchet (1886) cited J.M. Delavay 4 under C. meyeniana , and Finet & Gagnepain (1903) and Anonymous (1984) cited both J.M. Delavay 4 and J.M. Delavay 5146 under this species, but Wang (2003) cited the G sheet of J.M. Delavay 5146 under C. finetiana . These two collections, with no bracteoles borne on the pedicels, should not belong to C. meyeniana or C. finetiana . A new variety, C. jialasaensis var. macrantha Wang (2001b: 4) , was described on the basis of a collection from Yanjin county in northeastern Yunnan, i.e. F. Ducloux 2021 (P; Fig. 26 View FIGURE 26 . It seems that J.M. Delavay 4 and J.M. Delavay 5146 can be readily referred to C. jialasaensis var. macrantha , but the identity of C. jialasaensis var. macrantha itself, just like that of C. craibiana and of C. jialasaensis , is problematic. Under both C. armandi and C. jialasaensis var. macrantha Wang (2003) , in the same paper, cited M.Y. He and Z.M. Tan 117028 (CDBI, PE, SZ; Fig. 27 View FIGURE 27 ), a collection from Leibo county in southwestern Sichuan, China. The only difference between C. armandi and C. jialasaensis var. macrantha seems to lie in the presence or absence of large scale-leaves at the base of inflorescences. Large scale-leaves are indeed present at the base of inflorescences on some sheets of the collection M.Y. He and Z.M. Tan 117028 ( Fig. 27B, D View FIGURE 27 ), but absent on other sheets of the same collection ( Fig. 27A, C View FIGURE 27 ). Further studies are needed to determine the identity of C. jialasaensis var. macrantha with certainty and correctly identify the collections of J.M. Delavay 4 and J.M. Delavay 5146.

When Sprague (1916) dealt with the taxonomy of Clematis meyeniana , he pointed out that the original descriptions of C. meyeniana and C. oreophola corresponded respectively to lower and upper portions of the plant. He thus further stressed that “much of the difficulty experienced in classifying the species and varieties of Clematis is due to the incompleteness of the specimens available for examination. The leaves and even the inflorescences often show considerable differences according to the part of the plant on which they are borne, and care and care should therefore be taken by collectors to obtain a series of specimens from the various parts of a single plant.” Although he may have wrongly reduced C. craibiana to the synonymy of C. meyeniana based on the type material which includes only portions of a plant, his suggestion on the collecting method of specimens of Clematis is worth being kept in the mind of collectors of plants in this genus. In our opinion, when classifying the species of Clematis , some of which are morphologically highly variable, the importance of using a combination of characters instead of relying on only a single character, cannot be over emphasized.
