FAMILY COLUBRIDAE Oppel 1811 , 376

(21 genera, 43 species, 5 endemic species). Oppel used Colubrini in his key to the Ophidii.

Chironius Fitzinger 1826 , 29 (1 species) Chironius grandisquamis (Peters 1868, 451)

Coluber Linnaeus 1758 , 216 (1 species)

Coluber mentovarius (A.M.C. Duméril, Bibron & Duméril 1854a, 187). Solís et al. (2014) considered this species a member of the genus Masticophis Baird & Girard (1853 [p. 98]). I disagree with their comments and think that if Masticophis is to be retained, it will be strictly for the striped and somewhat smaller species occurring in the southwestern USA and Mexico (type species M. taeniata [Hallowell 1854 p. 181]) and not for the Coluber - like species C. mentovarius and relatives. Study is needed of the Coluber - Masticophis problem.

Dendrophidion Fitzinger 1843 , 26 (3 species)

Dendrophidion apharocybe Cadle 2012 , 198

Dendrophidion percarinatum (Cope 1893, 344)

Dendrophidion rufiterminorum Cadle & Savage 2012 , 23. Unlike stated by Solís et al. (2014), McCranie (2011a) did not use D. nuchale (Peters 1863 [p. 285]) for Honduran populations (he used D. clarkii Dunn 1933 b [p. 78]).

Drymarchon Fitzinger 1843 , 26 (1 species)

Drymarchon melanurus (A.M.C. Duméril, Bibron & Duméril 1854a, 224)

Drymobius Fitzinger 1843 , 26 (3 species)

Drymobius chloroticus (Cope 1886, 278)

Drymobius margaritiferus (Schlegel 1837, 184) Drymobius melanotropis (Cope 1875, 134)

Ficimia Gray 1849 , 80 (1 species) Ficimia publia Cope 1866 , 126

Lampropeltis Fitzinger 1843 , 25 (1 species)

Lampropeltis abnorma (Bocourt 1886, legend page for plate XXXIX in A.H.A. Duméril et al. 1870–1909)

Leptodrymus Amaral 1927 , 28 (1 species)

Leptodrymus pulcherrimus (Cope 1874, 65)

Leptophis Bell 1825 , 322 (5 species)

Leptophis ahaetulla (Linnaeus 1758, 225). This species represents a complex of several species. Nelson Albuquerque plans to elevate several “subspecies” of this geographically wide-ranging nominal form to the species level (pers. comm.).

Leptophis depressirostris (Cope 1861, 557). Honduran specimens of this species have significantly fewer subcaudal scales than do those from further south.

Leptophis mexicanus (A.M.C. Duméril, Bibron & Duméril 1854a, 536)

Leptophis modestus (Günther 1872, 26)

Leptophis nebulosus Oliver 1942 , 12

Mastigodryas Amaral 1935 , 157 (3 species)

Mastigodryas alternatus (Bocourt 1884, 133). Despite saying they were documenting all name changes subsequent to the McCranie (2009) list, Solís et al. (2014) did not note that McCranie (2011a) resurrected this species name from the synonymy of M. melanolomus .

Mastigodryas dorsalis (Bocourt 1890, 724 in A.H.A. Duméril et al. 1870–1909)

Mastigodryas melanolomus (Cope 1868, 134)

Oxybelis Wagler 1830 , 183 (4 species, 1 endemic species) Oxybelis aeneus (Wagler 1824, 12)

Oxybelis brevirostris (Cope 1861, 555)

Oxybelis fulgidus (Daudin 1803c, 352)

Oxybelis wilsoni (E) Villa & McCranie 1995, 297

Phrynonax Cope 1862 , 348 (1 species)

Phrynonax poecilonotus (Günther 1858, 100). Solís et al. (2014), despite their claim, failed to document this genus name change subsequent to the McCranie (2009) checklist. Jadin et al. (2013) transferred this species from Pseustes Fitzinger (1843 [p. 27]) to Phrynonax and also detected what appears to be an undescribed genetic “lineage” of this nominal form in Guatemala and Honduras. Jadin et al. (2013) also overlooked the comments of McCranie (2011a) regarding the type locality of P. poecilonotus (type locality in Belize, not Honduras).

Pseudelaphe Mertens & Rosenberg 1943 , 61 (1 species) Pseudelaphe flavirufa (Cope 1867, 319)

Rhinobothryum Wagler 1830 , 186 (1 species)

Rhinobothryum bovallii Andersson 1916 , 32

Scolecophis Fitzinger 1843 , 25 (1 species)

Scolecophis atrocinctus (Schlegel 1837, 47)

Senticolis Dowling & Fries 1987 , 202 (1 species) Senticolis triaspis (Cope 1866, 128)

Spilotes Wagler 1830 , 179 (1 species). Jadin et al. (2013) recovered preliminary genetic evidence that more than one species was involved under this genus and its single currently recognized species. Spilotes pullatus (Linnaeus 1758, 225)

Stenorrhina A.M.C. Duméril 1853 , 490 (2 species)

Stenorrhina degenhardtii (Berthold 1845, 39)

Stenorrhina freminvillii A.M.C. Duméril, Bibron & Duméril 1854 b, 868

Tantilla Baird & Girard 1853 , 131 (9 species, 4 endemic species)

Tantilla armillata Cope 1875 , 145

Tantilla impensa Campbell 1998 , 6

Tantilla lempira (E) Wilson & Mena 1980, 25

Tantilla olympia (E) Townsend, Wilson, Medina-Flores & Herrera-B. 2013, 194

Tantilla psittaca (E) McCranie 2011b, 38

Tantilla schistosa (Bocourt 1883, 584 in A.H.A. Duméril et al. 1870–1909)

Tantilla taeniata (Bocourt 1883, 587 in A.H.A. Duméril et al. 1870–1909). This nominal form seems to represent a species complex among the populations in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras ( McCranie 2011b).

Tantilla tritaeniata (E) H. Smith & Williams 1966, 483

Tantilla vermiformis (Hallowell 1861, 484)

Trimorphodon quadruplex H. Smith 1941 , 157
